I am currently a Preservation Surveyor working for Wise Property Care in the Edinburgh area and the surrounding districts. I was head hunted from my previous employer by the manager at the Edinburgh Branch who thought that I would be a worthwhile asset to the company. Although I worked in the Information Technology business he was convinced that my experience in Project Management and my manner in which I dealt with people would make me an ideal Surveyor. Now quite a few years later the rest is history and I love working in the Preservation Industry.
I carry out various types of Surveys for both domestic and professional clients, these including dealing with most building aliments from the top down, surveys ranging from Woodworm to Damp and of course the dreaded Rot.
I have various technical qualifications from various Industries and have carried out hundreds of surveys with all sorts of weird and wonderful problems. I have project managed numerous large scale jobs whilst working for Wise Property Care and have a good eye for detail. “ The devil's in the detail” my dad always reminds me and he’s correct, it especially applies to the Preservation Industry.
My very first job was working as a Shoe Repairer when I was 16, I had just left school about two weeks before and my mum (bless her) handed me a newspaper with lots of jobs circled. I phoned up the first one on the list, went to the interview and got the job straight away. I remember walking along the street after I’d got the job and wondering what I’d let myself in for.
I suspect that the next big thing in our business may be video surveys with online access to the digital reports, click the link on the digital report and the video which will be stored in a hosting site will be played, showing the cause and effect of any issues found. This would be ideal for large scale jobs where more than a picture and a description are required.
WW2 Living History, primarily the U.S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations. I also love watching a good movie while curled up in front of the telly.
Moving from the Information Technology Industry to the Preservation Industry.
Having a really good year in only my first full year with working with Wise.
Do it, it can be hard work but it’s a great job and no two days are ever the same.
Edinburgh, love the city!
Not sure, maybe Peter Kay.
