Tell us about yourself
I recently gained promotion to Preservation Surveyor after working as a technician for nearly 15 years with a demonstrated history of working in the construction industry. Skilled in restoration, customer service, team building, and construction.
What are your responsibilities?
My responsibilities are to survey properties with-in Forth Valley and FIfe for any issues in the forms of wet & dry rot, rising damp, woodworm and condensation.
What qualification do you have?
The qualifications i have along with standard grades, highers and an HND in Furniture restoration are all building/construction related through many preservation avenues for all types of renovations
What was your first job?
My first full time job was within the preservation industry, dealing with wet/dry rot, rising damp and woodworm straight out of school. My Dad has been in the building industry since the 80's and he taught me joinery while growing up which inevitably lead me to what I do today.
When it comes to property, what is the next big thing?
Energy efficiency is the next big thing, re-usable energy, solar panels and even the trial of Tesla solar roofing tiles.
What one thing above all sells a house?
For me it's character, remove all clutter but leave some personal touches. A buyer needs to envisage themselves living there but at the same time make it welcoming and not just a generic hotel look with plain colours and pictures.
What are your past times and interests?
Furniture restoration is one past time of mine. I reupholstered my own sofa and all my furniture is made from real timber and not laminate so it can be restored and last a long time.
Cars is another interest, tinkering around see how things operate and see if it can be fixed by my own hands.
One other is cycling but I don't get out as much as I used to and I do miss it.
what is your career highlight?
Working on a legendary comedians house (who cannot be named to respect their privacy) was an amazing restoration project to work on and career highlight of mine.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
As a techinician, you knew where you were and what you had to do. Being promoted to surveyor was some what overwhelming and learning a whole new role lead to a fair few challenges.
What advice would you offer to those looking to be a specialist surveyor?
Don't expect it to be a 9-5pm job. Any surveyor that wishes to be successful needs to maintain a level of discipline and hard work. You get what you put in.
If money was no object where would you live?
Barcelona, I have lost count the amount times I have been there, I love the city the culture and the architecture, from Gaudi's architecture of the cathedral, his home and park, to the architecture of the gothic quarter is amazing.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with?
The celebrity I would most like to meet would be Tom Hanks. I don't know how much he knows about building restoration and I can't act, so i don't know how we could work together but, as i type this i know he's an avid collector of typewriters and i like tinkering with stuff, so if he had a typewriter that may need some attention we could maybe work together
