Said to be Glasgow's most loved building and a major attraction to city dwellers and tourists; Kelvingrove has become the most visited Museum in the UK outside London. Home to many wonderful pieces of art and interesting anthropological and archaeological collections, its natural history collection is a favourite with school children and many of us will remember our childrens' faces when they first encountered the dinosaurs, and the elephant and baby elephant.
Refurbshing a Glasgow icon
With the recent refurbishment now complete, Wise Property Care is proud to have assisted with the renovation of this iconic landmark. It is no chore finding sentimental thoughts about Kelvingrove and we all have our favourite pieces however, with rising dampness and leaking downpipes which were embedded within the stone walls of the building, an innovative feature for the time allowing for the building to free of clutter, it was a big job to fix the leaks - the consequences of which can be seen as stains on the inside walls.
Brian Reid, Operations Director with Wise Property Care, rose to the challenge inspecting the building with minimal impact on the existing structure and provided specifications for the repair of decayed valley and Parapet gutters and rafters. All repairs were carried out to suit the exacting environmental policies that were a major feature of this contract and to minimise the requirement to uplift lead roof and valley flashings.
Utilising unique fibre optic borescopes for low disruption investigation to the roof areas, a comprehensive plan of repairs was established and executed achieving the objective of minimal intervention to the building fabric.
With works inside the Gallery now complete the Gallery is now open to the grateful Glasgow public and its numerous visitors to enjoy for years to come.
