The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation
The University of Edinburgh’s historic Old High School has been transformed into a modern, energy efficient hub for awareness, innovation and skills. This thrilling project involved the conservation and re-modelling of a Category B listed 18th Century building to house a world-class interdisciplinary research and teaching facility focused on climate challenges.
Chair of RICS Scotland judging panel, Laura Hall MRICS, said:
“A joint effort by the three universities in Edinburgh to create a world class facility within an exemplar building. The sensitive approach to conservation went hand in hand with the objectives for environmental performance. It is the first refurbishment project in the UK to achieve BREEAM Outstanding at design stage.”
As winner of the Building Conservation award, The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation will join the winners in all other categories to represent Scotland at the global RICS Awards final which will take place in London in October.
Sarah Speirs, Director RICS Scotland, said:
"This year RICS Scotland’s Awards have attracted over 50 outstanding and exemplar entries, despite the ongoing uncertainty of the economic climate. These projects demonstrate the quality of projects and talent of property professionals in Scotland as we continue to produce impressive built schemes.
“I would like to congratulate all category winners and our Project of Year, which is a fine example of how building conversation projects help to preserve and restore our Scottish heritage.”
